Why socks are knit smaller than the foot they fit

Sock yarn's stretch is what makes negative ease work: knit a sock's circumference a bit smaller than the actual foot circumference, and the fabric stretches to fit snugly rather than sitting loose and sliding around inside a shoe. 10% negative ease is the standard starting point for a typical ribbed or stockinette sock in wool-blend sock yarn; firmer or less elastic fibers (cotton blends, some plant fibers) hold up better with slightly less negative ease, since they have less stretch to give.

Rounding the cast-on to a usable number

The raw math rarely lands on a clean number, so this rounds to the nearest multiple of 4 — a standard convenience for socks worked on double-pointed needles or two circulars, since most heel-flap and gusset construction methods divide the stitches evenly across instep and sole. If your stitch pattern has its own repeat (like a 6-stitch cable panel), you may need to nudge the count further to a multiple that fits your pattern repeat cleanly, even if it strays slightly from the exact gauge math.

How to Measure a Foot and Size a Sock

Socks fail on fit more than on technique. A sock that's slightly too big bags at the heel and slides down inside a shoe; slightly too small and it's uncomfortable and wears through fast. Both come from the same two measurements, and both are easy to get right once you know that a sock is deliberately made smaller than the foot it goes on.

Step 1: Take two measurements

Measure standing up, with weight on the foot, since feet spread under load. And measure both feet — a difference of a quarter inch between them is common, and you size to the larger one.

Step 2: Subtract for negative ease

A sock is knit about 10 percent smaller than the foot. This is not an error to correct; it's the reason socks stay up. The ribbed, stretchy fabric expands to grip the foot, and a sock knit to the actual measurement will sag, bag at the ankle, and wear at the heel where it slides.

Multiply your foot circumference by 0.9, then multiply by your stitch gauge to get the cast-on number. The calculator above does both steps and rounds to a usable number.

Step 3: Round to something workable

Your calculated number will rarely be one you can actually use. Sock stitch counts need to divide evenly — in half for the heel and instep, and usually by four for the ribbing and the toe decreases. Round to the nearest multiple of 4, or of 8 if you want k2p2 ribbing to close cleanly.

Round down when you're between numbers. Sock fabric stretches generously, and a sock slightly too snug fits well while a sock slightly too loose never does.

Step 4: Know where the parts go

For a cuff-down sock, the sequence and the one measurement that matters at each stage:

That "2 inches short" figure is the one to remember. The toe decreases consume roughly two inches, so you stop the plain foot there and let the shaping finish the length. Toe-up socks reverse the order but use the same number.

Step 5: Try it on

The great advantage of socks is that you can check the fit while making them. Slide the work onto a spare circular needle or waste yarn and put it on. Do this at the end of the leg, after the gusset, and before starting the toe.

Step 6: Yarn and durability

Socks take more abuse than any other handknit. Use a sock yarn with 20 to 25 percent nylon — pure wool wears through at the heel within a season. Work at a tighter gauge than the yarn label suggests, typically 8 to 9 stitches per inch for fingering weight, because dense fabric resists abrasion and a loose sock fabric pills and thins quickly.
