Why you chain more than your stitch count
A foundation chain has to cover both your working stitches and the "turning chain" — the extra chains at the start that stand in for the height of your first stitch, so Row 1 lines up correctly. Taller stitches need a taller turning chain: single crochet needs 1 extra chain, half double crochet needs 2, double crochet needs 3, and treble crochet needs 4. Skip this and you'll come up short on live stitches in Row 1 even though your chain count looked right on paper — this is the single most common reason a beginner's first row doesn't match the stitch count the pattern expects.
Does the turning chain count as a stitch?
Pattern-writing conventions genuinely differ here, which is part of why this trips people up. Many modern patterns treat the turning chain as not a working stitch (you skip it entirely when working back across on later rows), which is what this calculator assumes since it's the more foolproof, less error-prone convention for a beginner to follow consistently. Some patterns, especially older ones or in taller stitches like double crochet, do count the turning chain as the first stitch of the row instead — if your pattern explicitly says the turning chain counts as a stitch, subtract 1 from this calculator's result to match.
Checking your first row
After working Row 1, count your actual stitches before continuing — it's much faster to unravel one row than to discover a width problem after ten rows in. If you're consistently one or two stitches off from the target, that's a sign to adjust your own turning-chain habit (some crocheters chain 1 extra "just in case," which throws this exact math off) rather than a problem with the chain count itself.
How to Make a Foundation Chain
The foundation chain is the first thing anyone learns in crochet and the thing experienced crocheters complain about most. It is the row that sets the width of everything above it, it is easy to make too tight, and miscounting it means discovering the error at the end of row one. All three problems are solvable. These instructions use US terms.
Making the chain
Start with a slip knot on your hook. Yarn over — wrap the working yarn over the hook from back to front — and draw it through the loop already on the hook. That is one chain. Repeat.
Keep the chains sliding along the shaft of the hook rather than bunching at the narrow tip. Chains formed on the tip come out smaller than the ones you'll actually be working into, which is the mechanical cause of the too-tight foundation almost everyone starts with.
Counting correctly
Two rules, and nearly every miscount comes from breaking one of them:

Count the V shapes lying flat on the front of the chain. For anything over about thirty, place a stitch marker every ten as you go — recounting a chain of 140 three times is a genuinely dispiriting way to start a blanket.
Which loop to work into
Look at your chain: the front shows a row of V shapes, and the back has a raised horizontal ridge, the "back bump." You have three options for where to insert your hook on row one.

Working into the back bump takes a project or two to feel natural, and it noticeably improves how a finished piece looks. If a pattern doesn't specify, this is the one to default to.
Fixing a too-tight chain
Nearly universal among beginners, and the cause of blankets that pull in at the bottom. Three fixes, in order of how much they help:
Use a hook one or two sizes larger for the chain only, then switch to your working hook for row one. This is the simplest fix and it works. Beyond that, consciously loosen your grip on the working yarn while chaining — tension habits are hard to change, but the chain is short enough to hold your attention. And keep the chains on the shaft, not the tip, as above.
The reverse problem, a chain that's too loose, is less common and usually just means dropping back to your working hook size.
How many to chain
You need one chain per stitch, plus the turning chain that gets your hook to the right height for the first stitch of row one.

The calculator above works out the total for your stitch count, stitch type, and any pattern repeat. If your pattern has a repeat — a shell or ripple — the stitch count must be a multiple of that repeat, which is where most chain-length errors actually come from.
The alternative: skip the chain entirely
The foundation single crochet (fsc) makes the chain and the first row simultaneously, and it is worth learning if long chains frustrate you. Chain two, insert into the first chain, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop — that makes the "chain" part — then yarn over and draw through both loops to complete the stitch. For each following stitch, insert your hook under the two loops of that chain part you just made, and repeat.
It produces a stretchier, more forgiving edge that never comes out too tight, and it removes the counting problem because you count actual stitches rather than chains. The same technique exists for taller stitches as foundation double crochet. Many crocheters switch to this permanently after one project.
Common problems
