How to Space Increases or Decreases Evenly Across a Row

Why the spacing usually isn't perfectly even

Splitting a stitch count into equal segments only comes out clean when it divides evenly — 120 stitches into 8 evenly-spaced increases gives a tidy 15 stitches per segment, but 118 stitches into 8 increases doesn't divide evenly at all. When that happens, this calculator spreads the "extra" stitch across as many segments as needed rather than piling it all into one long segment at the end, the same even-distribution approach used throughout this site for spacing shaping across rows. The result is a repeat with two segment lengths instead of one (say, five segments of 15 and three of 14) rather than one segment noticeably longer than the rest.

Why the stitch count math depends on your technique

A lifted increase (M1) is worked in the gap between two existing stitches and doesn't use up a stitch of its own, so every original stitch in the row still needs to be accounted for in the plain-stitch segments. A worked-into increase (KFB, or 2 stitches into the same stitch in crochet) uses up one existing stitch to produce two, so that stitch comes out of your total rather than sitting alongside it. Decreases always consume 2 stitches to produce 1, regardless of whether you're working k2tog/ssk or a crochet 2-together decrease. Picking the wrong option here throws off the segment lengths even though the number of increases or decreases stays the same.

Flat rows vs. rounds

The underlying math is identical either way — this only changes how you read the result. Worked in the round, treat the repeat as cycling continuously back to your marker. Worked flat, the last segment simply runs to the end of the row; if you want the two edges of a flat piece to look more visually symmetric, working half of the first segment's stitches before the very first increase or decrease (and folding the rest into the final segment) is a common refinement many knitters do by eye once they have this base repeat to start from.

How to Space Increases or Decreases Evenly Across a Row

"Decrease 12 stitches evenly across the row" is one of the most common instructions in knitting and crochet patterns, and one of the least explained. It turns up above ribbing, at the top of a sleeve, and anywhere a piece changes width without changing shape. Here is how to actually do it.

The arithmetic

You are dividing your stitches into equal groups and putting one shaping stitch in each group. Take your stitch count and divide it by the number of increases or decreases you need.

Say you have 96 stitches and need to decrease 12. That's 96 ÷ 12 = 8, so you work a decrease every 8th stitch: six plain, one decrease using two stitches, repeated twelve times. The calculator above does this for any combination, including the ones that don't divide cleanly.

The detail people miss is that a decrease consumes two stitches, so the group size has to account for both of them. Divide first, then work out how many plain stitches sit alongside each shaping stitch, rather than counting plain stitches and adding the decrease on top.

When it doesn't divide evenly

It usually doesn't. If you have 100 stitches and need 12 decreases, you get 8.33 per group, which is not a thing you can knit. Two acceptable approaches:

Neither is detectable in the finished fabric. This is one of those places where patterns imply a precision that doesn't exist and isn't needed — "evenly" means "roughly evenly, and nobody will measure."

The practical method: markers first

Do not try to count this as you go. Counting to eight, working a decrease, and starting again for ninety-six stitches is how people end up three stitches short at the end of the row and have to rip back.

This takes an extra two minutes and turns a fiddly row into a mechanical one.

Flat rows versus working in the round

Working flat, you have a beginning and an end, and the natural thing is to leave a few plain stitches at each edge so the shaping doesn't crowd the selvedge. Working in the round there is no edge, and the groups have to close the loop cleanly — if the last group is a different size from the rest, that discrepancy sits at the start of the round where it is more noticeable than it would be at a seam.

In the round, it is worth adjusting to make the groups divide evenly even if that means changing your shaping count by one. One extra or one fewer decrease is invisible; a lumpy join at the start of every round is not.

Don't stack shaping rows

If a pattern has you work several evenly-spaced shaping rows over the course of a piece, offset where the groups begin each time. Starting every shaping row at the same point stacks all the increases into vertical columns, which produces visible lines running up the fabric — the same problem that turns a crocheted circle into a hexagon. Shifting the start by half a group each time scatters them and keeps the fabric smooth.
