Why join style changes the yarn total so much

A whip stitch join barely uses more yarn than the seam's own length, since it's just a simple in-and-out stitch tacking two edges together — it's the most yarn-efficient option and nearly invisible from the front, but it's also the least durable of the common joins and can work loose under stress over years of washing and use. A single crochet join, by contrast, builds a full row of actual stitches along the seam, using roughly three times as much yarn for the same seam length, but it's noticeably stronger and can double as a visible design detail (a contrasting join color is a popular choice specifically because sc join stitches show clearly on the front). Flat braid and other join-as-you-go methods land in between: more yarn than a whip stitch, less bulk than a full sc seam, with a distinctive braided texture along every join line.

How the total seam length is estimated

This assumes a mostly-filled rectangular layout based on your squares-per-row entry — every square shares an edge with its neighbor to the side and, except for the first row, with the square above it, so the total number of internal seams grows faster than the square count alone would suggest. A 48-square blanket laid out 8 across by 6 down has significantly more total seam length than the same 48 squares joined end to end in one long strip, because a grid has both horizontal and vertical internal joins where a strip only has one direction of seams.

Buy a little more than the estimate

Joining yarn is easy to run short on mid-seam, and unlike the main body of a blanket, a color change partway through a join line is much more visible and much harder to hide. Round up to the next full skein rather than buying the bare minimum yardage, especially if you're using a coordinating or contrasting color that might not be easy to match again later from the same dye lot.

How to Join Granny Squares

Joining is where a pile of squares becomes a blanket, and it is the stage most people underestimate. The seams are a large fraction of the finished surface, so the method you choose is a design decision rather than just construction — and doing it in a sensible order turns an intimidating job into a series of short ones. These instructions use US crochet terms.

Step 1: Block the squares first

Squares straight off the hook are rarely the same size, and joining mismatched squares is how blankets end up with rippling seams and corners that won't lie flat. Pin each damp square to identical dimensions, let them dry completely, and they will match. This is dull and it is not optional — every problem it prevents is much worse to fix afterward.

Step 2: Lay out the whole blanket before joining anything

Arrange every square on the floor in its final position and look at the color distribution from a few feet away. Move squares until it reads well: check that no two identical squares touch, and that one color isn't clustered in a corner. Then photograph the layout and number the rows with sticky notes or safety pins.

You will not remember the arrangement once you pick them up. The photograph is what lets you put a half-joined blanket down for a week and come back to it.

Step 4: Join in strips, not all at once

Wrestling a growing blanket through every seam gets heavy and awkward fast. Instead:

This keeps every individual seam short and manageable, and the only heavy handling happens at the very end.

Step 5: Work every seam the same direction

Always join from the same edge — top to bottom on every vertical seam, left to right on every horizontal one. Alternating directions introduces a subtle difference in tension between seams that shows as a slight lean in the finished grid, and it is invisible while you work and obvious once it's done.

Match corner to corner first, then work along the edge, joining stitch to corresponding stitch. If one square has more edge stitches than its neighbor, skip a stitch on the longer side about a third and two-thirds of the way along, where it disappears.

Step 6: Border and block again

A border tidies the outer edge and hides the seam ends where they meet it — see the blanket border calculator for the stitch counts. Then block the whole blanket once more. The second blocking is what settles all those seams into a flat, square grid, and it makes a bigger difference than any single joining decision does.
