How to Shape a Sleeve ↓Why this is harder than it looks
A sleeve taper isn't one calculation, it's three stacked on top of each other: converting two body measurements into stitch counts using your gauge, working out how many total shaping events that difference requires (at 1 stitch per edge per event, so 2 stitches per shaping row), and then fitting those events into your row count — which, if you're shaping on right-side rows only, gives you roughly half as many usable rows as you might assume. Missing any one of those three steps is exactly how a taper ends up uneven or simply doesn't fit the rows available, which is why this tends to trip people up doing it by hand.
When there isn't enough room
If the shaping needed doesn't fit into the available rows at the standard 1-stitch-per-edge rate (a real possibility with a short sleeve cap or a large arm-to-wrist difference), this calculator will flag it rather than silently producing an impossible plan. The usual fixes are working the shaping 2 stitches at each edge per event instead of 1 (fewer, more aggressive shaping rows), or adding a few rows to the taper if your length allows it — both are shown when relevant.
Getting the direction right
Bottom-up sweaters increase from wrist to upper arm as you work toward the body; top-down sweaters decrease from upper arm to wrist as you work toward the cuff. The stitch counts and row-by-row plan are mirror images of each other either way — what changes is simply whether row 1 in this plan is your cast-on/starting round at the wrist or at the underarm.
How to Shape a Sleeve
A sleeve is a tube that changes width gradually — narrow at the wrist, wide at the underarm — and shaping it is a matter of spreading a known number of increases or decreases across a known number of rows. The arithmetic is simple. What makes sleeves go wrong is placement, pairing, and running out of rows before you run out of stitches.
Step 1: Know which direction you're working

Getting this backwards produces a sleeve that's wide at the wrist and tight at the arm, which is a mistake people genuinely make and don't notice until the second sleeve. Check the direction before the first shaping row.
Step 2: Work out the rate
You need three numbers: the stitch count at the narrow end, the stitch count at the wide end, and the number of rows between them.
Subtract to get the total stitches to change. Because you shape at both edges of the sleeve, each shaping row changes two stitches — so divide the total by two to get the number of shaping rows. Then divide your available rows by that, and you have your interval.
A sleeve going from 40 to 68 stitches over 60 rows needs 28 stitches, which is 14 shaping rows, which is one every fourth row. The calculator above does this and handles the cases that don't divide cleanly.
Step 3: Handle an uneven interval
The interval is rarely a whole number. Alternate between two intervals rather than rounding — every fourth row and every fifth row alternately, for instance. This is standard practice, invisible in the finished garment, and much better than rounding to one number and arriving at the underarm with the wrong stitch count.
Always shape on right-side rows when working flat. Shaping on a wrong-side row leaves a slightly different-looking edge, and mixing the two is visible along the seam.
Step 4: Place and pair them
Work the shaping one or two stitches in from each edge, never in the first and last stitch. This leaves a clean column of selvedge stitches for seaming and turns the shaping into a tidy line rather than a ragged edge.
Pair them so they mirror: on an increase row, M1R at the start and M1L at the end; on a decrease row, ssk at the start and k2tog at the end. Using the same increase or decrease on both edges makes both shaping lines slant the same direction, which reads as an error even to someone who couldn't explain why. Step 5: When there aren't enough rows
Sometimes the arithmetic gives you an interval of less than every other row, meaning you need to shape faster than the rows allow. Three options:

That last one is worth checking first. Row gauge is the measurement people skip, and sleeve shaping is where skipping it shows up.
Step 6: Make the second sleeve match
Write down your actual shaping rows as you work the first sleeve — not the plan, but what you really did, including any adjustments. Then follow that record for the second. Sleeves that don't match are among the most visible flaws in a finished garment, and reconstructing what you did from memory three weeks later does not work.
A note on sleeve caps
Everything above covers the taper along the length of the sleeve. The cap — the curved top that fits into the armhole on a set-in sleeve — is a different and harder problem, involving bound-off stitches, rapid decreases, and a curve that has to match the armhole's own curve. Follow your pattern's cap shaping as written rather than recalculating it, unless you've changed the armhole depth, in which case the cap has to change with it.
